New Zealand - Wellington, Goodbye North Island!
Wellington
Day 14 - December 25th 2008
On Christmas Day, as expected, the city was completely dead so we drove around the windy, mountainous back-roads of Wellington just checking out the area. It’s a cute city by the bay; very green with lots of parks, the houses have adequate space between neighbors! Not bad ;)
Thanks to the holiday, we found “cheaper” tickets to ride the Inter Islander Ferry across the Cook Straight to the South Island, so we said goodbye to the North Island for now, anticipating even cooler landscapes and scenery in the south.
Christmas traffic for the ferry crossing..
The ferry crossing took almost 3 hrs and riding it wasn’t too bad. They had a cafe, bar, movie theater and tvs every few isles playing Monster’s Inc, which was nice. It was hard getting a seat because we boarded and darted right to the cafe instead of grabbing two seats together in a good spot (damn stomaches!). So we ended up sitting amongst some spoiled, bratty kids who made the trip feel much longer than it was, lol!
Chris capturing the “Queue” of RVs leaving the ferry..
Lastly, here’s what our route looked like from our tour of the North Island! 12/12 - 12/25
It’s funny even with what seemed like an endless amount of time, we still missed out on a good portion of the west coast of the north island. The good news is that gives us plenty reason to come back for more, next time!
Thanks for reading!
