New Zealand - Waipu Caves to Ahipara
Waipu Cove
to Waipu Caves
Day 5 - December 16th 2008
While staying in Waipu Cove, the locals we told us to check out the nearby Waipu Caves to see glow-worms. So after we packed up shop, we headed north to see our first glow worm cave!
Waipu Caves entrance

It was just a short traverse into the cave before we saw our first NZ glow-worms! The view was amazing, especially with the flash lights off it was very reminiscent of the night sky.

After seeing our first glow-worm cave we continued north to the Bay of Islands area, driving most of the day and picking up supplies. We eventually set up camp at the Haruru Falls Resort in Pahia, and had a nice view of a waterfall from our RV. (no photos though ;)
Pahia to Ahipara - The Bay of Islands
Day 6 - December 17th 2008
Continuing north, we toured the Northland Bay of Islands area and the views were just spectacular... that being said we stopped off for lunch at a picnic area at Cable Bay!
woohoo!!
and a happy, happy Jenn!!
Continuing north, we decided to check out this amazing place we saw in a brochure called Maitai Bay! So far, I’m rating this the most GORGEOUS beach in NZ! If the water wasn’t freezing cold (like California, lol) we would have totally stayed and swam.. ahh.. next time ;)
pretty tide pools at Maitai Bay

That night we stayed in Ahipara, at the Ahipara Backpackers & Motorcamp, pretty much the gateway town to the most north-western part of New Zealand, Ninety Mile Beach. There we saw many New Zealand Tui’s and Fan-tails! Eventually I’ll find and post photos or illustrations of the birds we’ve seen so far. It’s amazing seeing all these new birds & I want to share the excitement!
Cheers!
